A Rare Survivor from the Final Air-Cooled Era

By 1998, Porsche’s one-make Supercup and Carrera Cup championships were at a crossroads. The series had established itself as a proving ground for rising talent and as a showcase for Porsche’s engineering. The 993-based 3.8 Supercup cars represented the very last evolution of the factory-built air-cooled racing 911. Only 15 were built in this final year before the transition to the 996 water-cooled platform. As such, they mark the end of a dynasty stretching back to the 964 Carrera Cup cars of the early 1990s.

Unlike many period cars that saw years of abuse, neglect, and piecemeal repairs, this example has survived in exceptional condition. With a fresh PMNA-built motor, original components often lost to attrition (seat, steering wheel, Supercup horn button), and exhaustive documentation, it is one of the most complete, reference-quality cars from this bygone era.

Provenance: Team Tolimit Motorsport

This car, chassis #14, was raced in 1998 by German driver Frank Schmickler under the Tolimit Motorsport banner. Schmickler’s consistency earned him 5th place in the overall Carrera Cup standings, while his efforts contributed to Tolimit securing the Teams’ Championship that year. The Carrera Cup Deutschland was among the most competitive national one-make series in Europe, with grids packed full of professional drivers and young talent—making this result a meaningful part of Porsche’s motorsport heritage.

This 1998 Porsche 911 (993) 3.8 Supercup presents as one of the finest surviving examples of the last air-cooled Cup cars. Finished in white and currently wearing a yellow wrap to reflect its original race livery, the presents in exceptionally well-preserved condition. Unusually for a car with genuine Carrera Cup pedigree, it is accompanied by an immense and highly valuable package of spares and documentation. Included are original items almost never seen intact on these cars—its factory hood, rear spoiler, steering wheel, and centerlock Speedlines—along with a spare set of BBS wheels. Additional competition parts such as bumpers, brake and suspension components, body panels, and other hardware form part of the spares package, offering both security for future use and evidence of careful stewardship over the years.

Documentation is equally comprehensive, ranging from build records, technical manuals, and Carrera Cup/Supercup literature to a 1998 Porsche Sport Yearbook, while the glovebox bears the autograph of its 1998 Carrera Cup driver, Frank Schmickler.

Importantly, the car benefits from a fresh, documented PMNA engine rebuild, ensuring it is mechanically as robust as it is historically significant. As a complete package—race-proven provenance, originality, meticulous preservation, and a level of support materials rarely seen—this Supercup stands not just as a collectible artifact of Porsche’s final air-cooled racing era, but as a truly reference-quality example for any serious collection.

Eligible for highlight events like Monterey Historics, Luftgekuhlt, and more, this presents an exceptional entry into a phenomenal category of cars. Now that it’s over 25 years old, it can likely be plated for street use, as well.
